Angels – The Home Church 40

Welcome to this week’s Scripture passage “Angels” to study in your Home Church *. Today’s scripture speaks of God’s victory over Satan (the devil), who in the Old Testament is mentioned as prosecutor (Job 1: 6) and “accuser of our brethren” (Revelation 12:10). Now he is defeated by the Archangel Michael and his angel army. That Satan falls from heaven “like a lightning” refers to the prophecy of Isaiah: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer! As a lightning falling out of the cloud, so have the fallen morning star been thrown down.” Satan’s power is now broken. He can not do those who believe any real damage. We can be like the disciples and rejoice that evil spirits still today flee in the name of Jesus, and that there are angels watching over us. In almost all the books in the Bible angels are mentioned, they are God’s messengers who are sent out to provide guidance and reveal God’s will for humans. They provide protection, are sent out in response to prayer. The help freeing people from dangerous situations and gives the faithful courage.

Luke 10:17-20 (Paraphrase) “The seventy came back triumphant. “Master, even the demons danced to your tune!” Jesus said, “I know. I saw Satan fall, a bolt of lightning out of the sky. See what I’ve given you? Safe passage as you walk on snakes and scorpions, and protection from every assault of the Enemy. No one can put a hand on you. All the same, the great triumph is not in your authority over evil, but in God’s authority over you and presence with you. Not what you do for God but what God does for you—that’s the agenda for rejoicing.”

Revelation 12:7-12 (Paraphrase) “War broke out in Heaven. Michael and his Angels fought the Dragon. The Dragon and his Angels fought back, but were no match for Michael. They were cleared out of Heaven, not a sign of them left. The great Dragon—ancient Serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, the one who led the whole earth astray—thrown out, and all his Angels thrown out with him, thrown down to earth. Then I heard a strong voice out of Heaven saying,

Salvation and power are established!
Kingdom of our God, authority of his Messiah!
The Accuser of our brothers and sisters thrown out,
who accused them day and night before God.
They defeated him through the blood of the Lamb
and the bold word of their witness.
They weren’t in love with themselves;
they were willing to die for Christ.
So rejoice, O Heavens, and all who live there,
but doom to earth and sea,
For the Devil’s come down on you with both feet;
he’s had a great fall;
He’s wild and raging with anger;
he hasn’t much time and he knows it.”

1. Start with eating a meal or having a snack together, and talk about the past week (share life). Make sure everyone who is present have a chance to speak.
2. Read the introduction and Bible verse above, loud and slowly for each other.
3. Turn off the sound on your mobiles. Put a stopwatch (we usually use the stove clock) on 10 minutes, close your eyes, and be totally silent until the timer rings. In the beginning thoughts will be bouncing, but then they will calm. Preferably do this exercise every day, as we meet so many things that distracts us from calming ourselves and listening to Gods Spirit. Read the Daily Bible Verse at the top right of TheWebChurch.in – before starting the silent part.
4. Pass around something small (could be a candle). The person holding this is the one who talks about thoughts of the Bible text that emerged during the silence. Of course it is also alright to share other thoughts that come to surface during the time you calmed your soul (Psalm 131: 2) >>
5. Talk about this weeks challenge (see below), pray for one another and finish by praying out loud Our Father >>

This weeks challenge:
The Bible says: “Isn’t it obvious that all angels are sent to help out with those lined up to receive salvation?” (Heb. 1:14). Is there any person or situation where I now want to ask God to send his angels?

* The idea of a Home Church is that you do not have to go to a certain church building to learn more about God. You only have to find at least one other person to form a home study group (church) with. That’s how easy it is. Invite someone home for food or refreshments. It’s fine to start a home church with people who are not christians (family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc.). If so, work with the Bible verses based on “If this was true – what would it mean for me and my every day life?” We will publish new material every week (according to the church year texts). Jesus says in Matthew 18, verse 20: “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”.

Ps) We publish new posts every week. Please subscribe (the field to the right of this box), so you do not miss anything.
